Welcome center may be sold to fill general fund budget gap

BATON ROUGE - The Center Park Welcome Center may be on the chopping block as state leaders look to ditch properties that aren't being used as much as they should be.

"The welcome center is a great facility that just isn't being utilized enough to justify the expense for taxpayers," said Commissioner of Administration, Kristy Nichols.

The 4,242 square foot center is worth an estimated $7.34 million. If the sale is approved, the money will be added to the state's general fund, where it is sorely needed.

However, some people said they think the state's focus should be on other things.

"The state government needs to look at the way they spend the people's money. And we're in a position now where raising taxes is almost inevitable, but I think years ago, had we done some things differently, we might not be here right now," said Clay Young.

Next week, the legislature will make a decision on if the building will be sold or not.
