Vice President Pence pays surprise visit to Denham Springs couple
DENHAM SPRINGS - A couple in Livingston Parish received a surprise visit from a very special guest Wednesday.
Jimmy and Olive Morgan were shocked to find out that Vice President Mike Pence made an unexpected detour to visit them at their Denham Springs home. Pence was in town to meet with business leaders in Port Allen, but he decided to make the extra stop while he was in the area.
"He stuck out his hand and said, 'hey Jimmy, hey Olive, how you doing?' He remembered our name everything," Jimmy said.
The Morgans' home took on seven feet of water during last August's flood, and they were left stranded on their own rooftop until they were finally rescued.
They met Pence, who was governor of Indiana at the time, after he flew out with then Presidential Candidate Donald Trump on August 19 to survey damage caused by the flood.
Three weeks ago, the Morgans say they received a letter stamped with a presidential seal.
"This was a letter from the vice president of the United States and it just absolutely blew us away," Jimmy said.
But little did they know, he would soon be back for another visit.
"I just couldn't believe that we were actually standing there with the vice president," Olive said. "He's just easy to meet and talk to."
Despite the hardship they experienced last year, the Morgans' positive attitude is contagious. So much so that the vice president himself pointed it out.
"We don't really think about it, but they said they were inspired by our American spirit," Olive said.
