DENHAM SPRINGS - Police said late Monday evening Robert Kohl, 47, of Fort Worth was killed in an altercation with officers earlier in the day.

Kohl, a trucker, may have been driving too many hours before he pointed a gun at Denham Springs Police officers, who shot him in response. The incident happened in a parking lot near Bass Pro Shops, several restaurants and a boat store between Bass Pro Boulevard and Range 12 Boulevard, south of I-12 around 3:30 Monday afternoon.

Police said Kohl was upset about being forced to stop the night before after driving too long. According to authorities, he fussed about being told to stop driving and even called police dispatch, claiming he'd been chased by officers. Sunday night, local and State Police told Kohl to park his truck and rest.

Around 11:30 a.m. Monday police said the man called his dispatcher and was told to wait and do what State Police told him to do. Investigators said the man's mother told police he then called her, upset about not being able to drive. She called police to tell them her son sounded suicidal, and reported where he was.

Denham Springs Police spokesperson Glenn Lemoine said officers arrived and found the man armed. They told him to drop the weapon and he did not. He pointed the gun at an officer, and another officer shot Kohl with a shotgun.

"He brought the gun down, he was waving it, kind of toward the restaurant and then he pointed it at the police officer and the other police officer shot him in the stomach and he rolled twice," said Marlee Mitchell, who was watching from a restaurant window nearby.

"After about 5 minutes the man stepped out from the sign, drew a firearm, pointed right, pointed left. One pop, dropped to the ground," said Matthew Cook, who was driving by the altercation as it got heated.

Kohl was shot in the stomach near his truck and died at a hospital.

Police said the officer used the shotgun to minimize the threat a stray handgun bullet might post to other people in the area.
