Thousands of callers complain about EBR grass

BATON ROUGE - The Department of Public Works in East Baton Rouge is getting swarmed with thousands of calls complaining about neglected properties.

Since April, the city-parish has received around 4,500 calls on blighted property and overgrown weeds. But 3,000 of those calls were specifically for tall grass.

Since the beginning of July, it's gotten more than 500 calls about overgrown lots and yards. But the city-parish is working to crack down on neglectful homeowners.

"If someone would have been charged a violation of maybe a $125 fee, now it could potentially be in the thousands of dollars," said code enforcement officer Justin Dupuy.

DPW said it doesn't have enough personnel to meet the demands the high volume of calls would require. But officials told News 2 they're doing the best they can with the workers they have.

DPW plans to hire several seasonal workers to help with the load of cases.
