Theft at the USS Kidd

BATON ROUGE - Some thieves are on the run after stealing five artifacts from exhibits on the USS Kidd.

Sunday, one or more people used bolt cutters to get into areas where artifacts were on display.  They managed to swipe dinnerware from the ship's Bosun locker and Wardroom.

"It's hard to put a value on that because some stuff in here is irreplaceable.  They just don't make that stuff anymore," said the Kidd's ship supervisor, Tim Nessmith.

The Wardroom, essentially a dining room, was recently restored and used as a set for the TV show 'NCIS New Orleans.' The two doors leading to the cabin are normally locked. Sunday evening, the door was found open and the lock was cut off.

Five pieces total were taken from the shop, two bowls, two saucers and one plate. All are white with a blue ribbon around the edge and a blue anchor.

The items taken, like many others on the ship, were donated by a veteran. This dining set was donated by a veteran living in New Mexico and date back to the 1950s.

"It's almost as if you took an old veteran and mugged him on the street," said Nessmith.

Ship curators say they feel violated and are now questioning the access patrons have to the ship on a daily basis.

"I would never dream of doing something like this. It's really frustrating," said Nessmith. "You can't put a value on a veteran's memories."
