Store clerk charged with attempted murder after fight with customer turns into shooting
BATON ROUGE- Authorities say a store clerk has been arrested after an argument with a customer led to a shooting at a local market Friday.
The incident occurred at the City Town Meat Market in the 8800 block of Scotland Avenue early Friday morning.
According to the Baton Rouge Police Department, Abdulghani Mattit got into a verbal altercation with a customer. During the verbal altercation, Mattit came from behind the counter with a piece of wood and struck the victim in the head, according to arrest records.
The two began to wrestle with each other until Mattit went back behind the counter to retrieve a Ruger LC9 9mm semiautomatic pistol. Mattit then came from behind the counter and engaged the victim a second time.
Mattit fired at least one shot from his pistol, striking the 41-year-old victim in the upper right hip area.
The victim then fled the store and called police. He was taken to a local hospital in stable condition. Police say Mattit never called authorities and tried to dispose of evidence prior to officers' arrival.
Mattit was arrested and booked on aggravated battery, attempted second-degree murder, illegal possession of a stolen firearm, illegal carrying of a weapon and as a fugitive from New York.
He was also arrested in 2016 while he was being investigated in connection with a November shooting. He was charged with illegally carrying a firearm in that case.
