BATON ROUGE – The East Baton Rouge School System held a ground breaking ceremony for the new Istrouma High School in North Baton Rouge.

The school was closed by the state two years ago, but will reopen next year following an eight-month, $21 million renovation.

"It is very exciting to get a school back in North Baton Rouge, a high school in 70805," Superintendent Warren Drake said.

Parents, like Pearl Porter, are also excited about the project since all four of her children graduated from Istrouma.

"I'm so excited about what's going on here and I always knew. I always prayed to God that we would get our school back because education to me is vitally important," Porter said.

For two years, students in the community near Istrouma had to travel far for school, however soon they will have a school they can call home.

"It just means so much to this community, it's very important that we service children in this area you know they have to get up early and are bused to other schools," Ebony Williams, former teacher, said.

The school, which first opened in 1917, will now house 1,200 students and feature a new athletic field
