Proposed traffic improvements in the works for Range Avenue
DENHAM SPRINGS - A $4 million traffic improvement project is in the works for one the busiest streets in Livingston Parish.
One-mile stretch of Range Avenue from Aspen Square Road to Bay Street is notorious for car accidents. According to state officials, more than 100 collisions happened there in 2015.
"There's just under 40,000 cars a day exiting I-12 to go through Denham Springs," Mayor Gerard Landry said. "That's a significant amount of traffic on that road."
DOTD has plans in the works to make that portion of Range Avenue safer for drivers. The project would eliminate traffic in the center lane, and change where motorists can make left turns.
Some frustrated drivers say it takes them forever to make a left turn.
"That's tough, especially certain times of the day when it's high traffic," one driver said.
In addition to improving safety, the project is also designed to improve the flow of traffic by removing stop lights. Reducing the number of driveways at businesses is also being proposed.
"From a safety standpoint, they are going to make Range Avenue faster and safer to travel," Mayor Landry said.
Since more studies and public hearings will be held, it may be two years before work on the project can start.
