Police chase leads to arrest of serial burglary suspects
DENHAM SPRINGS - Police said a pursuit in Denham Springs ended with the arrest of two men who investigators believe burglarized homes in several parishes around the Capital Area.
22-year-old Patrick Booker and 25-year-old Charlie Matthews, both of Baton Rouge, were booked on charges of burglary of an inhabited dwelling, aggravated flight from an officer and resisting arrest with other charges possible.
Detective Glenn Lemoine with Denham Springs Police said the two men are believed to have broken into homes in Livingston, Ascension, and East Baton Rouge Parishes.
“My detectives along with detectives from East Baton Rouge had been setting up in different parts of both parishes close to parish lines in an attempt to catch these subjects pulling residential daytime burglaries in both areas,” LPSO Sheriff Jason Ard says.
Lemoine said a deputy spotted the suspects' car and tried to pull it over, but it took off instead. The chase ended when the car ran into the CVS Pharmacy on Range Avenue in Denham Springs, and Lemoine said one suspect ran inside and locked himself inside the store's bathroom. The other suspect tried to flee the scene but was quickly arrested, according to police.
During the pursuit, the suspects’ vehicle hit one of Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office’s units with a deputy inside. Sheriff Ard said the deputy, a veteran, was uninjured.
Multiple law enforcement agencies including Denham Springs Police, Baton Rouge Police, and the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office were at the scene.
