Old Perkins Road repairs, may hold some drivers up

BATON ROUGE - Old Perkins Road will undergo construction this week, meaning at times the road will be down to one lane in each direction.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development said the project will begin Monday and go through Thursday. Lane closures will take place in the evenings from 8:00 pm to 6:00 am.  The project is part of an effort to repave the road.

Those who drive through the area warn that the congestion is already bad.

"In the morning if you're coming from Ascension parish and going to East Baton Rouge parish, the road is backed up and the wait is normal for 20 to 25 minutes to go two miles every morning," said Martin Hernandez, who travels the road every day.

But drivers said the short term struggle will be worth it in the end.

"It's a sacrifice that we have to make...I think in the long run, if it's not addressed now, then it's going to cost the tax payers even more money and we don't want that," said Joyce Rodrigue, a driver that's excited for the repairs on the historic road.

"It's always the pain of progress. Progress is painful. But the road's very much in need of repair. It has so much traffic, it's been deteriorating for years," said Hernandez.

DOTD said the work may be subject to change, depending on the weather.
