New St. Amant High wing complete, while flood repairs continue in other areas
ST. AMANT - For the first time, St. Amant High School freshman are walking the halls of a brand new school. But their first day is coming six months late.
"The coming of the freshman academy is a really big event," St. Amant High Principal Mia Edwards said, "that St. Amant High School is getting a new facility, so we've really been looking forward to it. So, for that to have been taken away when school started, I'm really excited that they are going to be here to experience some of that."
The new wing of St. Amant High will be especially vital for rest of the current school year. The classrooms will be shared by other grades while repairs continue on the main campus.
Plans always existed for the schools to share the new, larger cafeteria. That will make moving students back to St. Amant easier.
"Temporary buildings don't have kitchens," Superintendent of Ascension Parish Schools David Alexander said, "so on our other campuses, we're having to get our kitchens kind of temporarily back up to date."
Construction crews still have some finishing touches left on the building. Desks are expected to move in on schedule for the building's first day of classes in February.
District representatives say repairs are going smoothly on the main part of St. Amant High School, though some classes will take place in temporary classrooms just starting off.
