SHREVEPORT - A child is dead and another was hurt after a woman allegedly threw them from a bridge in northern Louisiana.

KTBS reports the children were recovered from Cross Lake in Shreveport around noon Friday. Police believe 32-year-old Ureka Black tossed them from a lower bridge on South Lakeshore near the I-220 bridge.

The youngest child was pronounced dead at the scene.

Black's five-year-old son was alive but in what was considered life-threatening condition at the time.

He was rushed to Ochsner LSU Health for treatment and officials say his condition improved by day's end.

Initial reports suggested a third child was thrown into the water, but that child was found safe elsewhere, according to KSLA.

Authorities say Black was driving a Dodge van when she was arrested by state police near the Louisiana-Texas state line around 2:30 that same afternoon.

Shreveport police have charged Black with one count each of second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder.
