Money for a new bridge study

GONZALES - The Baton Rouge area is a step closer to getting a little traffic relief.

Thursday, the Ascension Parish Council approved a resolution to enter into a cooperative endeavor agreement with Iberville Parish to share some of the cost of a traffic study.

Based on what Iberville Parish decides at its next council meeting, Ascension Parish would provide $125,000 toward the study, to match state monies approved in the last legislative session.

Recently, State Representative Karen Saint Germain backed a study that would include a new highway along the west bank of the Mississippi River and a bridge at Plaquemine.

"It would allow the trucks and different traffic that's not actually stopping in Baton Rouge to bypass the city all together and leave those spaces for cars that actually have to get in and out of Baton Rouge," said Ascension Parish Councilman Bryan Melancon.

The state agreed to take care of the bulk of the study costs, but asked Iverville and Ascension to put up some money to ensure both parishes are committed to working together.

"It would give another avenue for the people of Ascension that work on the other side of the river and vice versa to get across in a convenient and much quicker way," said Melancon.

Right now, the proposed costs for construction hit around $1.6 billion dollars.
