LSU Baseball Media Day - Pitching Staff
BATON ROUGE - LSU baseball head coach Paul Mainieri covered a lot of ground in his Media Day appearance Friday.
Mainieri, who is entering his ninth season with LSU, was asked about many new developments coming into the 2015 season including new flat-seamed baseballs which the NCAA voted to switch to this year.
"During the course of fall practice we hit 16 home runs (with the new ball)," Mainieri said. "We only hit 10 the previous fall."
He said LSU's pitchers also enjoyed throwing the flat-seamed ball more, which feels smaller in their hands and also reduces problems with blisters forming. The LSU mound will also be in contention this year with six new pitchers, including five freshmen.
"You're going to be young every year in some aspect. You can't sign kids to 10 year contracts," Mainieri said.
Another new face for the Tiger coaching staff is former Tulane standout Andy Cannizaro, who spent the past five years as a scout for the New York Yankees. He was hired as a recruiting coordinator and hitting coach this past summer.
"Andy Cannizaro is going to be a superstar in the coaching profession. He has it all," Mainieri said.
The Tigers hit the field later today for their first practice of the season. Sports 2 will have more on the diamond Tigers tonight at 6 and 10.
