Iberville Parish puts 31 accused drug dealers behind bars

PLAQUEMINE - Dozens of accused drug dealers were locked up in Iberville Parish Wednesday.

It was part of an 18-month undercover investigation that ended with 31 people behind bars, and the second roundup in Iberville Parish since Sheriff Brett Stassi took office two years ago.

"I made it my business that we would not tolerate (drug dealing) and we will not stop until we have it eradicated," Stassi said.

Every person cuffed and hauled to jail Wednesday sold drugs directly to the Iberville Narcotics Task Force, according to investigators, who said the agents caught it all on camera.

"It's a vicious cycle that touches 85 percent of the crime in the city limits of Plaquemine," said Assistant Chief of Police Kenny Payne.

Local leaders said they're are working hard to change those numbers and clean up the streets. They say one of their biggest targets right now is prescription drugs, but warn that slinging dope, crack or pills could land you in the same place as the 31 people picked up Wednesday.

"You're going to face the penalty," Payne said. "Doesn't matter who you are."

"Heed our warning," Sheriff Stassi said. "We will not tolerate it on the streets of Iberville Parish."
