Families opting out of PARCC
CENTRAL- The Central Community School System has among the highest level of parents opting their children out of next week's Common Core test.
The district said 50 of their 2,000 students eligible to take the PARCC test, 2.5 percent, will instead sit it out.
Central Superintendent Michael Faulk said the high level of opt-outs will cause both the Central Middle School and the Central Intermediate School to both drop a full letter grade on the state-wide evaluation. Faulk wants the state legislature to fix the situation.
School administrators also said the parents choosing to keep their children from taking the test tend to be highly involved in their education. Faulk said it's students who have "historically done well" on standardized tests who have opted-out.
Less affluent districts have lower opt-out rates. Officials from those districts say parents who chose to opt out are most often middle-class individuals who follow anti-Common Core politics closely.
As of Thursday, West Baton Rouge Parish has 50 students sitting PARCC testing out and the Zachary Community School System has 31. The percentages are similar to Central's because all three school systems have smaller numbers of students overall.
On the low end of opt-out percentages is Livingston Parish with 50 students, Ascension Parish with 31, and East Baton Rouge Parish with 6. Those students make up much smaller percentages among the districts' student bodies. The City of Baker School System has no students opting out.
