EMS says response times 'So far, so good'

BATON ROUGE - Emergency responders said it's "so far, so good" when it comes to getting people to the hospital during a medical call.

Mike Chuszt, public information officer for East Baton Rouge Parish EMS, said right now they're averaging 16 minutes to get patients from the scene of an emergency to the ER.

"Up slightly, but not really enough to make a big difference as of yet. We don't know what the future holds, obviously," he said.

The city's emergency responders have had to adjust to one less ER in the city after Baton Rouge General closed its emergency room at the beginning of the month.

Chuszt said if anything changes and it looks like response times are getting too long, they plan to do something about it.

"The weather, the traffic, sometimes ambulances get blocked by trains. A lot of things play a role in those times. If we see a significant change and it starts to hamper our response time, and our ability to reach patients and get patients to the hospital, appropriately, we're going to have some adjustments that's going to have to be made," said Chustz.
