EBRSO: Student arrested after pulling loaded gun during argument at local middle school
BATON ROUGE - Authorities are investigating after a 14-year-old middle school student allegedly brought a loaded gun to school Thursday morning.
According to the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office, the 7th grade student at Capitol Middle School revealed the loaded .380 handgun during an altercation with two other students. The sheriff's office says an on-site school resource officer intervened and helped de-escalate the situation.
Other students reported seeing the firearm, and a search led to the gun being found in the student's bookbag.
The 7th grader is charged with illegally carrying a firearm on school property, aggravated assault and violating a firearm free zone. He has been booked into Juvenile Detention.
The school system released the following statement Thursday:
“The East Baton Rouge Parish School System was notified today that a Capitol Middle School student was found in possession of a weapon on school property. A student reported the weapon to school administrators. The School Resource Officer on campus immediately took action, de-escalating the situation and the weapon was confiscated. The student was arrested by School Drug Task Force and will be disciplined in accordance with the Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook. Please help us educate your children about the dangers and consequences of bringing any type of weapon on school grounds. All such incidents are taken extremely seriously and the safety of the students and faculty is our top priority.”
