EBRSO: Crash reveals school bus driver didn't have valid license
BATON ROUGE - An East Baton Rouge Parish school bus driver has been fired after rear-ending a parked car Monday afternoon. She was issued two tickets by EBRSO deputies. One suggests she shouldn't have been driving at all.
The accident happened Monday around 4 p.m. on North Flannery, near Delores, off Greenwell Springs. The Investigative Unit uncovered Latrice Winley was behind the wheel without a valid driver's license.
Winley was on the way home from the work when the accident happened; no kids were on the bus. Although she's been fired, parents are still concerned.
"I don't know how something like that could slip through the cracks," Christy Lewis, a mother of four told News 2.
A spokesperson for the school system told News 2's Brett Buffington Winley is at fault. A school board policy requires employees to report changes that could impact their jobs.
State law also requires the school system to check the licenses of bus drivers at least once a year. EBR schools say they check more often than that. According to deputies, Winley's license has been suspended since 2015. It's unclear why her license was taken away.
She's also charged with Careless Operation of a Vehicle. The school system is investigating what was happening on the bus at the time of the crash. There were several cameras, including one pointed directly at Winley.
