DANGER ZONE: Top 5 Most Dangerous Intersections

Related Story

BATON ROUGE - Baton Rouge is notorious for traffic congestion and wrecks snarl your commute, almost daily. News Two's Alexa Vogue narrowed the five most dangerous intersections and the spots identified are where you're most likely to get into a crash.

While there is no sure way to ever eliminate the risk of getting in a car wreck, knowing where to watch out can help. In East Baton Rouge Parish there are five hot spots most prone to crashes. They are Florida at Oak Villa, Perkins at Essen, Burbank at Boyd, Airline at Bluebonnet, and Nicholson at Aster.

Number one on our "hot spot" list is the intersection at Florida and Oak Villa with 142 crashes between 2010 and 2012. Frustrated drivers explain it is the long light cycle that causes backups, but heavy volume is also a key factor, with close to 50,000 people crossing through here everyday.

"Anytime you're in a high traffic area you need to pay extra close attention," said DOTD Communication Director Rodney Mallett.

Another high volume area is the intersection at Burbank at Boyd. With 106 crashes it is the second most dangerous intersection, but DOTD says that number should be dropping soon.

"We added a center turn lane so you'll start to see those numbers go down," Mallett said.

Perkins and Essen ranks third with just under 100 crashes. A big problem here is people getting impatient and left hanging in the middle of the intersection.

"People get aggravated, over zealous and what is that going to save you?" asked State Police Trooper, Doug Cain. "Three minutes hanging out in the intersection, possibly causing a crash, possibly getting a ticket."

Airline and Bluebonnet ranks number four with 97 accidents and 47,000 people speeding through the intersection daily.

And finally, Nicholson and Aster comes in last with 91 collisions, 74 of which were people who failed to yield. The state explains it is the disregard of the driver that puts people at risk, with careless operation, inattention and distracted driving causing a majority of these collisions.

"If you are not paying attention to what you're doing in a moving vehicle you increase your chances of an accident," Mallett said.

DOTD promises to do everything in their power to keep these collisions from happening, but says the only person who can ensure your safety, is you. If there's an intersection you think is dangerous, DOTD wants to know. Please visit dotd.la.gov for more information.
