Child safe, 16-year-old in custody after car is stolen with kid inside
BATON ROUGE - A teen suspected of stealing a car with a child inside was taken into custody after a brief chase through parts of Baton Rouge Friday afternoon.
It appears from dispatchers the child was not the initial target, rather a crook stole a car with a child inside. The car was stolen from the parking lot of a mechanic shop in the 2400 block of North Sherwood. The child, it appears, was found about a mile away on Choctaw.
A short time later, police tried to stop the stolen vehicle and had to briefly pursue the driver until they stopped at the corner of Frey and Conrad, which is in the Howell Park area of Baton Rouge.
The suspect has been identified as a 16-year-old male, according to police. He will face charges of felony auto theft, simple kidnapping, simple battery, child desertion, aggravated obstruction of a highway and resisting arrest.
It does not appear that anyone was injured.
