Central students finally allowed to have backpacks

CENTRAL - After a two year moratorium on backpacks in lieu of bulky binders, students at Central Middle School will finally be allowed to pack a bag on their back, albeit one that isn't too stylish.

Every student at the middle school will be issued a matching black mesh backpack as part of their student fees.

"They're better than binders because you can fit more stuff, and even though they got holes and they're kind of ugly, they still work," said Dawson Andrews, an 8th grader at the school.

The backpacks are needed because this year every students will get a laptop to use in class and at home, but they also help teachers keep an eye on students who just can't help but stash goodies in their bags.

"I know middle school students, and they like to bring things with them whether it be food or just their personal items, and it's just a way for them to stay organized if it's an open mesh bag it just makes it easier for us to see what's going on," said Principal Jason Fountain.

The backpacks come with a lifetime warranty, which will allow the school to replace any damaged bags for free.

Students will get their first chance to use them when they start school on Thursday.
