BRFD recruiting more firefighters
BATON ROUGE - If you're looking for a career where you can save lives, property and make a difference, the Baton Rouge Fire Department is looking for you. Fire Chief Ed Smith and Curt Monte joined us on 2une In this morning with an invitation to their recruitment day.
Recruitment Day is this coming Saturday, January 10th from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. At the Fire Headquarters (8011 Merle Gustafson Dr.). Every district will have representatives there and demonstrations taking place.
"What we want people to know is that the fire service has a lot to offer. It's not just a job. It's a career," Monte says. "There are many opportunities from mechanics to prevention to training officers; you don't just have to fight fires."
Right now applications are being accepted to fight fires, but there are opportunities to branch out elsewhere. The Recruitment Day comes as the department faces a shortage.
We're always a few short as far as retirement and attrition," Chief Smith explains. "This year we're going to be 15-20 people short."
The academy for those that sign-up will begin sometime around June.
They also had some tips on how to keep warm in these cold temperatures.
"Use extreme caution in the home," Monte warned. "With those space heaters, keep a 3 ft. Radius around and move anything that could burn...and smoke detectors in your home are like seat belts in your car; you always want to have it on."
Your family should also formulate a plan of what to do if there is a fire emergency in your home. It should include where to meet and how to get there.
"The greatest feeling for a firefighter is arriving on the scene of what could be a tragedy to find that everyone is already outside and safe," Monte opined.
