Beyond Bricks EBR needs your help to improve school system

BATON ROUGE - Community leaders are begging for help hoping to "recharge" the East Baton Rouge school system after being plagued by hardship for several years.

Poverty, mental illness and segregation are realities outgoing East Baton Rouge Superintendent Bernard Taylor said need to be talked about. He explained that his biggest regret is not addressing them sooner.

"Yes, you have these challenges," Superintendent Taylor said. "But you're figuring out everyday how to meet them."

Business owners, pastors and others came together Tuesday to ask the community for their input in an effort to determine what changes need to be made to make EBR schools excellent.

"People have struggled with things since time began so you can't use that as an excuse to say children can't learn," Superintendent Taylor said. "But the context in which they learn has to be taken into consideration."

"Beyond Bricks" is a community-driven discussion to help rebuild EBR schools and over the next few weeks "listening sessions" will be hosted, where everyone and anyone is invited to come, give their opinions about what's wrong and what's needed. They hope the open dialogue that addresses key issues, and will help cultivate ideas and ultimately produce results.

Superintendent Taylor says results will come when this becomes a priority for the entire community.
