Woman with gun in purse arrested while entering courthouse
NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office says a woman trying to enter a courthouse was arrested after a deputy spotted a handgun in her purse.
Local news organizations report 29-year-old Nadia Williams was arrested Monday on a charge of illegal carrying of a weapon.
Deputies say Williams walked into Orleans Parish Criminal Court and put her purse on the scanning belt. When the purse was scanned, a deputy noticed what might be a gun.
Deputy Thomas Elder scanned the purse a second time and found a .380 handgun with six rounds in the magazine, but none in the chamber.
Sheriff's office spokesman Philip Stelly says Williams had gone to the courthouse to accompany a male who had a court proceeding.
It isn't immediately clear if Williams has an attorney.
