SLIDELL - A woman whose burned body was found in a Louisiana home destroyed by fire last week died not from the flames but from a gunshot wound.

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office said in a news release Friday that DNA evidence confirmed the identity of the victim to be Nanette Krentel, the wife of St. Tammany District 12 Fire Chief Stephen Krentel.

An autopsy revealed a gunshot wound that killed the 49-year-old woman.

No information has been released on a possible motive or suspects.

Krentel's body was found in her home in the Lacombe area after firefighters put out the blaze on July 14. The fire investigation is being handled by the state Fire Marshal's Office. The Major Crimes unit of the Sheriff's Office is investigating the shooting death.
