White death rates up in middle age
NEW YORK- One group bucks the trend of falling death rates among Americans. Its middle-aged white people and suicides, drug overdoses and alcohol abuse are to blame.
Death rates for other races are falling as they have for whites 65 and older, but death rates for whites 55 to 64 are trending up. The findings are in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Researchers say the increase started in the late 1990s and is probably related to increased use of certain prescription painkillers.
The CDC says the findings aren't that surprising since its own researchers have reported multiple times on increases in deaths from suicides and drug overdoes involving people who are white and middle-aged.
