BATON ROUGE - Revelations that the FBI may have found a way inside terrorists cell phones Monday was optimistic news to investigators who are still trying to get inside a murder victim's locked iPhone.

For almost a year, authorities in Baton Rouge have been trying to figure out who killed Brittney Mills. Mills, who was pregnant when she was murdered, was shot and killed on her doorstep in April 2015. Investigators haven't identified her killer but believe they could if they were able to unlock her phone. They believe Mills' murderer was someone she knew.

Monday, WBRZ.com was first to report the FBI said it had found a 3rd party with the capability to unlock the phones of the two terrorists who killed 14 people in an attack in San Bernardino, CA in December. The FBI and Baton Rouge authorities face nearly identical issues of gaining access to the phone and Apple has argued it should not be forced into helping the FBI unlock cell phones.

"If this process works (with phones connected to the San Bernardino case), this process will apply to all the other similarly situated iPhones and it will really benefit everybody," DA Hillar Moore said in an interview Tuesday.

More hopes to learn more from the FBI in the next week or so. The FBI said Monday it wants to make sure using the 3rd party won't compromise data on phones.
