U High boys hoops books ticket to Marsh Madness, Walker girls lose in 5A title game
PORT ALLEN - John Jones missed a 3-pointer that could have won the game in regulation, but hit a big 3 in overtime as the University Lab School beat Port Allen 76-73 in overtime to reach the boys Class 3A semifinal.
The two teams swapped the lead throughout the second half, and with the game tied at 63 in the 4th quarter, Skylar Mayes found Jones in the corner for a 3.
The Pelicans weren't able to get a shot off after the miss, and the game went to overtime tied at 63.
After Jones' 3 in overtime tied the game at 70, the Cubs hit 6 free throws down the stretch, and the Pelicans fell short of the final four.
U High will now play St. Louis in the semifinals on Thursday.
Meanwhile in girls basketball, top-seeded Ponchatoula had no problem with No. 2 Walker, 47-29 in the 2015 Allstate Sugar Bowl LHSAA Class 5A State Championship Saturday night in Lake Charles.
Ponchatoula (29-3) was led by Arianna Hamilton's game-high 18 points. Kayla Lee added 13 points and four rebounds.
Up 31-21 after three quarters, the Green Wave lead would never get below five points as the defense paced the effort, forcing Walker into 33 turnovers - 18 in the first half.
It took nearly three minutes before either team got on the scoreboard and a bucket by Baylie Stears gave their only lead in the game at 2-0. It would be the only bucket of the quarter for the Wildcats as Ponchatoula held a 9-2 lead.
The Green Wave lead grew to as much as 13-2 in the second quarter.
Walker (30-6) was led by Jamie Gibson, who finished with 13 points and seven rebounds.
