PLAQUEMINE - State Police said two Denham Springs men died in a fiery wreck Wednesday evening in Iberville Parish.

Troopers said Charles K. Pope, 53, and Maurice A. Cormier, 52, were killed in the wreck on LA 1148 just west of LA 1 in Plaquemine.

Investigators said around 9 p.m. Wednesday Pope was driving west on LA 1148 when he lost control and ran off the road, hitting a tree. Troopers said the vehicle caught fire, killing both Pope and Cormier, who was his passenger.

State Police said Pope was wearing his seat belt, but Cormier was not. Investigators took samples from the scene to test for driver impairment.
