Trial revisits 'Goodfellas' heist

NEW YORK - An aging mobster is set to go on trial on charges he had a role in an infamous mob heist immortalized in the hit movie "Goodfellas."
Opening statements are scheduled Monday in federal court in Brooklyn in the case against Vincent Asaro.
Asaro's name hadn't been associated with the $6 million Lufthansa robbery at Kennedy Airport in 1978 until his arrest last year.
Prosecutors plan to use testimony from mob turncoats and wiretap recordings to prove the now-80-year-old Asaro helped plan the heist and got $750,000 for his trouble. They say Asaro blew much of that money at the track.
If convicted, Asaro would become the latest casualty of an erosion of the Mafia's code of silence that has decimated New York City's aging underworld.
