BATON ROUGE - A small church was hit hard over the weekend by thieves who took off the building's central heating and air conditioning unit.

"The devil don't care. They steal from the rich as well has the poor," Reverend Houston Stevenson said.

He's the pastor of True Holiness Ministry located at 6265 Gurney Street in North Baton Rouge, with a congregation of about 50.

"When I went outside to check my breakers, I noticed that my central air was gone," Rev. Stevenson said.

The reverend believes two or three people were involved in the theft, because of how heavy and the large size of the unit. He says a chain was used with a car or truck to uproot the iron cage that the appliance was housed in.

Service was still held Sunday morning, despite the church not having heat or air.

"Thank God it wasn't cold or it wasn't hot. It was just right," Stevenson said.

And even though it will take a month or longer for a small congregation to raise the money to replace the central air and heating unit, the pastor says, his church has already forgiven the thieves.

"Through all that you have done to us in this church, we still love you", Stevenson said.

No arrests have been made, but police are working clues that could help identify possible suspects.
