BATON ROUGE - Across Baton Rouge, locals are mourning the loss of 35-year-old Derrick Cavazos, a Southern University alumnus who was killed May 1.

Nearly two weeks after Cavazos' death, Baton Rouge Police say that Terrius Brown has been released from a hospital and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.  Brown was accused of forcing his way into Cavazos' home and exchanging gunfire with him.

Brown was booked on charges of first-degree murder, aggravated burglary, and illegal use of a weapon.

Cavazos was a beloved notable figure at SU, as well as a husband and a father.

"The students absolutely loved him. He had a way of bringing people to him. This is a big loss," said Albert Samuels, chair of the history and political science department at Southern University.

Friends and colleagues say he will be missed.

"He helped me through high school, helped me through college. He's a dear friend who I'm going to miss terribly," his lifelong friend Maria Harmon said.

Brown, was apprehended days after the murder, but was taken to a hospital before being booked into parish prison.
