BATON ROUGE - A 14-year-old does not believe he is a hero, even though he was honored like one after stopping a school bus when the bus driver was knocked unconscious by an unruly student.

Tayveon Slaughter saw what happened, watched the kid jump off the bus and then jumped into action.

"He stood up and punched her and she was knocked out. So, at that time, I knew I had to go stop the bus," he said. Slaughter gently applied the bus brakes, shifted it into neutral then pulled the parking brake.

"Everybody else didn't know what was going on; first thing that came to my head was run, try to stop the bus," he added in an interview with WBRZ News 2 Friday.

The renegade teen that caused the commotion was apprehended.

"I think the future of Baton Rouge looks bright because of Tayveon," his principal, Averil Sanders said. "People talk about some of the negative things young people do, but this is an opportunity to talk about a young man who stepped up to the plate."

"I just do what I have to do, to do better things in my life," Slaughter said.
