BRUSLY - Two investigations are underway in West Baton Rouge Parish after a fight on a school bus Wednesday.

The parents of a 12-year-old at Brusly Middle School said he received a skull fracture, bruised brain and concussion from the blow to the head. A witness on the bus says the skirmish broke out after a high schooler was teasing the 12-year-old about his small size. It happened in the morning as the bus driver was bringing kids to Brusly Middle and Brusly High Schools.

"Right after he got punched, he couldn't stand and my cousin Jude had to help him stand because he was shaking so bad," Hope Melancon said.

Melancon said the bus was in motion the entire time, and the driver never stopped.

"I don't know why she didn't stop the bus," Melancon said. "He looked terrible. His whole face was starting to swell and he started to shake and couldn't stand."

West Baton Rouge Parish School Superintendent Wes Watts said a bus driver won't stop until they are in a safe location. Also, it is customary for high schoolers to ride the bus with middle schoolers due to route convenience.

"The student showed up at school," Watts said. "A report was noted. Principal talked to the young man, gave him ice and we investigated and told the principal...'I would like to go to P.E.' Principal allowed him, when he came back and said he didn't feel well."

The student who threw the punch has been suspended.  First Student runs the bus system in West Baton Rouge Parish. First Student declined to comment due to the pending investigations.
