NEW ROADS - Some residents are concerned that the drawdown of False River could be damaging their property along the popular oxbow lake.

The drawdown of False River began in September as the first step toward rehabilitating the once thriving fishing spot. People can tell the effect the drawdown has had on the lake so far.

"It's definitely drawing the water down around the lake," said fisherman Charles Dartez. "There's a lot of dry areas and exposed grounds that are starting to dry out and consolidate some of the sediments there."

Residents are seeing piers and bulkheads move away from homes and yards sinking. Some are even seeing damage inside their home.

"I have a crack running all the way from the door frame, all the way across and it goes all the way through the house to the other side. It actually wraps around and comes all the way back here to my living room," said resident Larry Castello.

"Our concern is, not to hurt anybody, but our concern is when this project is finished we would like to know that somebody will be there to help us rebuild the properties to where they were before we dropped this water," said resident Rick Falgout.

Rep. Major Thibaut, D-New Roads, has fielded calls from several concerned residents. Thibaut says the project engineer will come out to take pictures and assess the properties. The engineer will then file a report, and they'll go from there.

"I'm still for the project. I hope the project does well. I think it will. I think it will bring back some vegetation and the fish population, and we don't mind that," said Falgout. "But we do mind if somebody just leaves us in the cold and doesn't help us with our properties."

The False River Civic Association will hold a meeting Wednesday, Jan. 28 at 6 p.m. at the False River Golf and Country Club. Thibaut and other parish leaders plan to attend.
