Smoke detectors and fire safety
BATON ROUGE- A smoke alarm can be the difference between life and death. Fire officials say you're 50% more likely to survive a fire if your home has working smoke detectors.
Detectors should be installed inside and outside each bedroom and sleeping area on every floor of your house and at least 10 feet from the stove.
It's also best to use interconnected fire alarms so when one detector goes off, it triggers the rest. Companies also make smoke alarms with strobe lights or that can shake the bed for people who have bad hearing.
You can apply for a free smoke detector through the state fire marshal's office here.
