BATON ROUGE - According to pediatrician, Dr. Mindy Calandro, there are many easy safety tips parents can use to make Halloween a safe and fun night for kids.

For Halloween costumes, Dr. Calandro recommended that parents to buy reflective tape from a local hardware store for costumes or to have their kids wear glow bracelets or necklaces to make sure they are seen on the streets when it's dark out. She said drivers should also pay extra attention to driving on the roads between 5 and 10 tomorrow night.

She also encourages children less than 12 years of age to be accompanied by an adult while trick-or-treating and to make sure to have a talk with children about the importance of not going into stranger's homes.

Dr. Calandro also talked about "The Teal Pumpkin Project" which is a campaign run by the Food Allergy Research and Education organization. The campaign asks for those who are handing out treats that do not contain common food allergy ingredients to paint a pumpkin teal and place it outside of their front door. The teal pumpkin is meant to let children with food allergies that the treats are safe to have. She also said teal is the color for food allergy awareness.

Dr. Mindy Calandro is a pediatrician at The Baton Rouge Clinic.
