BATON ROUGE - Planning officials recommended Monday night that land in south Baton Rouge proposed as the site of a barge cleaning company should be rezoned so the company cannot build there.

The East Baton Rouge Planning and Zoning Commission voted 6-3 to recommend the action to the East Baton Rouge Metro Council.

Tubal-Cain Marine Services applied with the Department of Environmental Quality to build along the Mississippi River across from Farr Park. The company deals with dangerous chemicals and would have a flaring operation, and company officials said they've already invested $4 million in the project.

The application drew criticism from property owners in the area who were concerned about air quality. DEQ officials said the proposed business didn't reach the threshold of pollutants needed to require public hearings.

Monday night's meeting drew nearly 100 people to protest the facility.

The Metro Council will take up the recommendation Wednesday.
