BERTRANDVILLE - Horse owners in the small Assumption Parish community of Bertrandville said they're standing guard after someone shot and killed two horses earlier this week.

"Right now I feel like all horses are in danger now until they find out who done did that," said Clifford Harris.

Harris says caring for horses is a way of life for many people in Bertrandville. The owner of the horses that were killed, known by the community as "Cowboy," says it's his first time without a horse in nearly 70 years.

"I grew up watching him with horses. That guy always had horses," said Harris. "He trained horses...to me like number one. It's just a community that everybody around here rides horses."

Investigators with the Assumption Parish Sheriff's Office say the gunman shot both horses from point-blank range with a handgun around lunch time Wednesday. One of the horses died at that time, and the other had to be put down by a veterinarian. Investigators sent shell casings found at the scene to the State Police Crime Lab.

Residents who live nearby say they will keep an eye out in the future.

"We don't know what really to think, but we know that we're taking turns back here every night right now," said Harris. "So somebody's always here at any time, so we're pretty much watching out right now."

As for the shooter, the community is left wondering who would kill a harmless animal.

"I would say someone that's cold-blooded. That guy must not care whoever would do something like that," said Harris. "I would probably shoot that person. I ain't gonna lie. If I walk up on a person that shot a horse, I mean there's gonna be some retaliation."

The Louisiana Department of Agriculture's Livestock Commission says there will likely be a reward for information that leads to an arrest.
