WALKER - The $150,000 overhaul at the Walker Animal Control Shelter is nearly finished.

As the work wraps up this week, the transformation is night and day. It's been in the works for the past seven years for Walker Councilwoman Scarlett Major who volunteers at the shelter often.

"It's wonderful the improved environment is going to be great for the animals and the shelter workers and even for the potential adopters to come in," she said.

The new kennels feature thicker chain-link fencing that's the proper size for dogs. The kennels also allow the shelter to house up to 50 dogs compared to only 24 previously. The flooring throughout the shelter is coated so cleanup will be easier for workers. The old concrete flooring caused sanitary concerns before the improvements.

"With the new ventilation they're going to be more comfortable, and we have the divider panels in between the kennels," said Major. "So there's no nose-to-nose contact for diseases or anything, so it's really upgraded."

The shelter will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony this week. Since it's currently closed for renovations the shelter does not have any animals. The shelter expects to take in dogs beginning next week.
