PORT ALLEN - Local voters are deciding whether to renew a property tax for the West Baton Rouge Parish Health Unit in Port Allen.

The tax has been in place since 1956. Parish finance director Phillip Bourgoyne says it will generate nearly $634,000 a year from 2017 to 2026.
The health office receives some money from the state, but Bourgoyne says the local tax covers most of the cost of salaries, maintenance and equipment.
Clinical Supervisor Araviance "Rae" Anderson says the Health Unit serves people who can't afford private health care.
Bourgoyne estimates the 1.75-mill property tax costs just over $23 a year on a $175,000 house with homestead exemption. Renewal is on the April 9 ballot, and early voting has started.
