BATON ROUGE - Police say 15 mailboxes were broken into overnight at an apartment complex in Baton Rouge. Investigators said while they weren't sure if the thieves were after shipped gifts or just the personal information found in people's mail, it's a sad example of Christmas Grinches looking to cash in on the holidays.

"People are sending gifts and a lot of time that's through the mail," said Baton Rouge Police Lieutenant Trueil Montague. "They're going to break into your mailboxes, especially if it's an apartment complex where there's numerous mailboxes."

Montague said he's been a victim of holiday theft in the past. He thinks it's easy access that makes his neighborhood an easy target.

"It's really easy for someone to come up snatch a package walk away and not even be noticed," he said. "We've had thefts all across the city and we want everyone to be aware of it."

Police urge people to be aware of their surroundings, hide any valuables and know an exact date of arrival for shipments expected in the next few weeks. They also suggested having packages sent somewhere more secure than your home, such as a workplace.
