Police say burglar broke into home and fell asleep
SLIDELL - Police arrested a man in Slidell after officers said he was found with stolen goods inside someone else's house, asleep on their couch.
Police charged 31-year-old Sharrod McCullum with simple burglary and criminal damage to property after his arrest early Wednesday morning.
Officers said they were called to a Slidell home after the resident woke up and found an unknown man asleep on his sofa. When officers arrived they woke McCullum and asked him what he was doing there. They said McCullum told them he'd been drinking the night before, and didn't know where he was or how he got there.
Investigators said McCullum had forced his way into the house through a back door. Officers found a screwdriver and a GPS unit on him, and they suspect he stole the device from a vehicle in the same neighborhood.
"This is funny and scary at the same time," said Slidell Police Chief Randy Smith. "We aren't quite sure what the suspect was thinking, but grateful he fell asleep before committing any further criminal acts."
McCullum was booked into the city jail, and investigators said more charges are expected to filed against him as their investigation continues.
