Parish wants to boost tourism with youth sports tournaments
COLYELL - Livingston Parish officials want to boost tourism by creating regular youth sports tournaments.
Parish officials are looking into scheduling tournaments in the parish every weekend during the March through July season.
Area director for the Fastpitch America Softball Association Sherry Jacob says she has begun looking into hosting tournaments in the parish.
Assistant director of the Livingston Parish Convention & Visitor's Bureau J.T. Taylor says some tournaments may be moving to Colyell from places like Covington or Mandeville.
His office is looking into working with hotels and shops to see if they can offer special rates to encourage players and their families to stay in local lodgings.
Taylor says he hopes to work with economists from Southeastern Louisiana University to determine the financial impact of such tournaments.
