BATON ROUGE - Temperatures are dropping and Thanksgiving is quickly approaching. That means one thing: Deer season is upon us. In this Outdoors Report, John Jackson sets you up for success when you are scouting a new area for deer.

The most critical decision to make when deer hunting is stand placement. The first thing you should do when setting up is find the food. If you don't have a food plot, look to the trees and search for things like persimmon. They look like tangerines and deer love them. A few weeks into the season you should also start looking for acorns.

Once you've located the food, start searching for the trails deer are using to travel to and from the food source. White tail never eat and sleep in the same place. They usually bed in heavy cover, so finding the middle point between food and bed increase your chances.

Once that's done, you need to find the perfect tree. You need to find a place where the wind won't take your scent into the feeding or where the deer approach from. Make sure you find your spot a few days before you plan to hunt.

If someone put a stand in your living room, you would probably hear them.
