THIBODAUX - Thibodaux's Nicholls State University has reached an agreement to waive out-of-state and international fees for Edison Chouest Offshore employees and their families in order to boost the school's enrollment.

Nicholls President Bruce Murphy and Kirt Chouest, the general manager of the Galliano-based shipbuilder and oilfield service provider, announced the partnership on Wednesday.

Choest says he will soon start contacting employees who might not have considered going to Thibodaux to obtain a degree.

Murphy hopes the partnership will help Nicholls reach its target enrollment of 8,000.

Nicholls currently has about 6,500 students enrolled, including 170 international students.

Murphy says he is focused on raising Nicholls' enrollment because of recent cuts to higher education spending in the state, which totaled $700 million from 2008 to 2013.
