BATON ROUGE - In 2013, University Lab pitcher Manny Miles was unstoppable on the mound.

As only a sophomore, Miles practically rewrote Cubs' history, holding at least a share of the single season record for every pitching category except saves and helping the Cubs reach the 2A State Title game.

Miles expecting to carry that dominance into his junior year, but a brokend hand in the state title football game, was just the start of a rash of injuries that held him out for the entire baseball season.

"I was out there cheering and being the best teammate i could," Miles said. "But in my heart i wanted to be out there playing."

Miles says sitting out his entire Junior season was one of the tougest things he had to do in his life but it was that time off that motivated him to come back even stronger for his senior campaign.

"Seeing that loss we had to John Curtis and all the losses we had that year was harder on me than it would've been when i was playing because i wasn't able to help the team."

"Sometimes when you have to sit out that year, it makes it tough and it puts that fire back in you," says U-High Head Coach Justin Morgan.

In 2015, Miles is currently 6-1 and a big reason the Cubs are ranked third in 3A. But for U-High to win a state title in baseball, Miles will have to rely on skills that he learned in the very sport that forced him on the sideline last year.

"On the baseball field, it's the same way as the football field. When you're out there pitching, you can't worry about one batter. it's a constant thing that you have to be mentally prepared for."
