Man arrested with DWI in fatal hit-and-run crash
GRAMERCY - A driver is charged for negligent homicide in a hit-and-run crash that killed a woman early Sunday morning in St. James Parish.
The crash took the life of 25-year-old Brittany Harris of Vacherie at the intersection of LA Hwy 3125 and LA Hwy 3213 around 5:45 a.m.
Investigators say 24-year-old Corey Newton of Gramercy was travelling eastbound on LA Hwy 3125 while Harris was travelling north on LA Hwy 3213. Detectives say Newton ran the red light at the intersection where the two roads meet and crashed into Harris' car on the driver's side sending her vehicle into a utility pole. Troopers say Harris was not wearing a seatbelt.
Troopers say Newton ran from the scene after the crash into a nearby wooded area, but was captured, arrested and transported to St. James Parish Jail by deputies.
Newton faces multiple charges including negligent homicide, DWI, reckless operation, hit-and-run driving, and traffic-control signals. Impairment on his part is suspected.
