Man arrested for shooting death of 22-year-old earlier this month
BATON ROUGE - Police say a man was robbed and shot to death inside his own apartment earlier this month.
Authorities responded to the shooting around 7:30 a.m. Aug. 3 at an apartment complex on N. Donmoor Avenue. Police arrived to find signs of a force entry at the back of the home.
Police arrived on scene to find 22-year-old Samuel Chocico shot to death in his apartment. A witness who was inside the home said he woke up to see the suspect, later identified as Damian Dowels, pistol whipping the victim and demanding to know "where the money was."
After Doewls allegedly took Chocico's wallet and two cell phones, he shot the victim and left on a bicycle. Surveillance video showed Dowels riding away from the complex around the time of the murder wearing yellow gloves.
Matching gloves and the two stolen cell phones were found dumped in a drainage ditch a short distance from the apartment complex.
DNA from the gloves matched Dowels profile, which was on record from a previous burglary. He was arrested Tuesday and booked on one count of first-degree murder.
Police said the home had been burglarized just days before the deadly shooting.
